Lodging

Licensed lodging facilities are inspected in partnership with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Bureau of Environmental Health Services, Commercial Lodging Program. Lodging establishments such as motels, hotels, and bed and breakfasts that have five bedrooms or more must be licensed by MDHSS prior to opening. The inspections include sanitation, health and safety.

ACCORDING TO THE FOOD CODE, A FOOD ESTABLISHMENT DOES NOT INCLUDE A KITCHEN IN A BED AND BREAKFAST OPERATION THAT:

• Prepares and offers food to guests if the home is owner occupied
• The number of available guest bedrooms does not exceed 4
• Breakfast is the only meal offered
• The number of guests does not exceed 12
• The consumer is informed by statements contained in published advertisements, mailed brochures, and placards posted at the registration area that the food is prepared in a kitchen that is not regulated and inspected by the regulatory authority.

Therefore, if any meal other than breakfast is offered, a food code inspection must be performed. Regardless of number of rooms, lodging businesses that are not on a city sewer system must also comply with on-site waste water treatment systems regulations.
